SUGGESTED PANEL TOPIC
Andrew is on a mission to raise industry awareness of the critical security issues which lie at the heart of emerging hybrid and connected TV models, which need to be addressed before premium content delivery becomes a reality in these emerging sectors.
Thus far, the industry assumption has been that manufacturers of connected TV displays and other hybrid retail devices should bear some of the responsibility for ensuring the security of such receivers. But do they have the experience, expertise – and the will – to do this? If not, how will device manufacturers guarantee that any widgets or applications on their devices are immune from piracy? And who will pay for the implementation of the security measures rights-owners are likely to demand?
Ultraviolet provides one possible answer. DECE has now launched the platform in the US and will be introducing its cloud-based digital rights locker to the UK soon. But Andrew believes that greater attention needs to be paid to the regulatory, commercial and technical issues raised by such a solution. Apart from its security aspects, issues he can examine on the panel are the challenges of DECE’s US-centric approach; the impact of not having support from Apple and Disney and the main providers of pay-TV solutions in Europe; and the nature of any content ownership rights.
